Locals for an anti-social.....
Posted: 2005-01-10 09:35:12

I'm looking for a location that is max 6 hours flight from Ottawa that has nice climate and secluded beaches.

I'm not that up on the idea of going to a country and spending all my time on an americanized resort but at the same time I want some things (like food) taken care of for me.

My ideal local would be Hawaii but it's an expensive trip and also 12 hours from Ottawa. But something like Hawaii... :)

Any suggestions?

Check out some of the places in the Cayes off the coast of Belize. San Pedro is a cool town with laid back restaurants.. Placencia in the South is good as well.. What kind of stuff do you want to do..?

Cost is a big thing too...

I've always liked Bermuda, its Britishness is a nice contrast to many Americanized resorts that make you feel like you've never left. It is, however, fairly expensive: some shopping around can find you a B&B for $150 USD a night, and that's during the offseason. There may be cheaper, though.

Otherwise, Cuba may be neat - great colonial architecture, and it is becoming a nice place for europeans to visit, too. The prices should be reasonable - I've seen week-long packages for less than $750 USD, and those are all-inclusive...

If you want Mexico.. Fly into Cancun, but head south through Playa Del Carmen. It's building up.. Sort of like Cancun 10 years ago...

Yeah honestly...Mexico was really low on my list of possible places but everyone I ask keeps telling me that its the place to be...

I like the idea of going to Cancun then road trippin south...Got more detail on that?

The roads between Cancun and the Belize border are paved, two lane. The distance is about 583 kilometers and takes about 8 hours. You take highway 307 south from Cancun to the 186 just before Chetumal. I'm not sure what the process is to drive cross the border with a rental car.

and- use the toll roads if you want a quick way south, or use the windy, slow, wonderful free roads to drink up some of real mexican countryside.

I would say, if you speak some spanish, you can find great enclaves off the tourist track in Mexico (such as the Hacienda Chichén at Chichén Itzá. The cottages were originally the homes of archaeologists of the Carnegie Institute, who established their headquarters here in the 1920s)

Not all is lost to the almighty dollar yet. ;)

Europe's the same like that... the only problem is you either get carsick from following narrow windy mountain roads, or can easily pay 100 euros or more for a long cross country trip on the tolls.

Actually.. for me, it's the back roads that make the trip..!
