Bridgetown: Bridgetown sports a mixture of architecture styles, from gothic to colonial to modern. Observe the rule of law at the Barbados House of Assembly and Parliament, relax at Queen's Park, with ancient baobab trees and nearby picnic tables, absorb the culture at the Barbados Museum, and consume at the pubs and bars on Baxter's Road. |
Barbados Wildlife Reserve: This whole area has become a great attraction to ecotourists interested in understanding the local wildlife. From monkeys and turtles down to iguanas and birds, the reserve has several sanctuaries helping to protect some of the rarer species. About ten kilometers to the south, you can also find Flower Forest, an old plantation with hundreds of mostly indigenous plants, and Harrison's Cave has a collection of rock formations and the tourist- friendly and massive Great Hall cavern. |
St. Lawrence Gap: The St. Lawrence Gap, about 15 kilometers southward along the coast from Bridgetown, this collection of villages and small towns is a great place to find cheap accommodations, lots of unique restaurants, and white sandy beaches, with the best being Dover Beach. If you are brave, forget driving around, and bring a nice pair of sandals to make your way between the towns. As well, some of the best kiteboarding in the world happens here. |

Moped: It is worthwhile to rent a moped at one of the agencies and save yourself the taxi fares. Gas is cheap, and a tank will only cost around $2 to fill up, but remember to drive on the left!

Greetings: Bajans are polite and cordial, so greet them with a "good morning" or "good evening" when entering a store or restaurant or when passing them on the street.
When To Visit: February to May will leave you with both the nicest weather as well as the peak tourists rates. Plan a vacation for late May to June to get the best of the weather on the off-peak season, or wait until mid-July to enjoy the three week Crop- Over Festival.
Phrases: Folks living in Barbados don't refer to themselves as Barbadosians, but as Bajans. In case you run into other local terms, Gap means street, Doin' Dixie is the life of the party, and Skettel is a mean woman.
Tipping: Most restaurants and hotels include a 10% service charge, otherwise, standard tipping rules apply for a 10% gratuity.
